I gave the Bushnell Legend 8x42 Binoculars their first real test at the Texas Big Hog Outing (BHO) this past weekend (March 17-19, 2000). Prior to that I had used them a bit around my house to get used to them before the hunt.

I took them to the blind with me for night hunting and for comparison I also took my old and much loved Steiner 6x30s. After a bit of comparison looking I laid the Steiners aside and for the second night of hunting I didn't even take the Steiners with me. The Bushnells were clearly superior. They were both brighter and clearer. I allowed all of the hunt attendees who wanted to try them also and all who did agreed they were bright and clear and to a person all liked them.

The first night I used these binoculars it was completely cloudy and rained a few times as we sat in the blind watching a feeder about 60-70 yards away. The feeder was under a tree canopy making it even darker. I had no trouble watching the raccoons and a deer feeding under the feeder. No hogs showed up that first night before Faye decided her feet were too cold and her knee hurt too much to continue the fun so we called it a night at 10:00 PM. The second night I sat in the blind by myself with only the Bushnell Legend Binoculars having already decided they were superior to my old 6x30s for the task. I arrived well after dark but this time the clouds were gone and the full moon was shining brightly. It cast heavy shadows under the trees where the feeder was but in spite of that I was clearly able to see a skunk and raccoon feeding on the corn. When a whitetail doe came by I watched her as she did the old head bob and foot stomp routines and they watched her run off into the brush as she tired of this and ran away.

Later there were six hogs in the sendero to my right which I easily watch for almost an hour as they moved around feeding and fighting with each other. It was too dark for me to accurately judge distances but I'd guess they were from about 80 yards or so to nearly 200 yards from me as they moved around. A bit far for the revolver I was using but they were clearly visible to me with the binoculars. I later heard grunts and squeals from my left which was the west and then a sounder of hogs that numbered over 20 came into the feeder. I was again clearly able to see the various hogs and pick out the largest of them with the aid of the binoculars even if not so easily done with the scope on my revolver. I had a Leupold 2x on the gun and wasn't able to see at all with it using the moon light. I used the 6 "D" cell Mag lite to illuminate the hogs for my shot. Sure wish the handgun scope had been as bright and clear as the Bushnell Legend binoculars were. Oh well, I got the hog regardless but that is another story for another place as this is a review of the Bushnell Legend Binoculars.

The center focus knob took a bit of getting used to for this old hard head who has been using only     individual focus binoculars since I worked for three years rebuilding binoculars for the Army at       Anniston Army Depot. All of the Army's binoculars were individual focus in those days long ago (mid 60s) and I learned to appreciate that feature and until Bushnell sent me these for test I have       stubbornly refused to use center focus binoculars. By the end of the hunt I was comfortable with that feature and using them as if I had always done so. Guess my stubbornness was uncalled for after all. All of the binoculars I've bought for my own personal use in the past have also been poro prism types and these are roof prism binoculars. They are much more narrow than the poro prism binoculars I've used in the past and at first that felt strange to me but I soon adjusted to it and found the more narrow size to be quite nice. Who says old dogs can't learn new tricks?

I plan to give these Bushnell Binoculars a lot more testing under a lot of different field conditions but the night time hunting and bouncing around in the jeep on the way to the stand a few miles back on the Reed Ranch gave them a pretty good test.  At this point I have nothing but good to say about them. These are what I would call mid priced binoculars. Midsouth lists them for around $290 and I'd say they are certainly worth every dime of that. You might find them priced less than that if you shop around but I haven't really looked for a better price and offer it only as a basis for comparison.  If you are looking at binoculars in this price range I'd say these would be well worth your money.

The Bushnell Legend binoculars are offered in both 8x42 and 10x42 size. The Legend™ class of binoculars provides superior optical resolution and performance from the highest quality BaK-4 prisms and Multi-coated optics while providing complete O-ring sealed waterproof protection and nitrogen purging for fogproof protection. Full product specifications and tech data is provided below for your review. I'm looking forward to more testing of these excellent binoculars.

Even with this limited test I must say that the Bushnell Legend Series Binoculars in 8x42 have earned the Graybeard Seal of Approval after the way they performed in the dark on my hog hunt in Texas. I will report more fully on them after additional testing.

Graybeard.
